| A little history about Porties
Portuguese Water Dogs (PWD for short) have existed for thousands
of years. Their lives began in Portugal working on fishing boats
helping the fisherman with their rough and sometimes dangerous work
at sea. While the fishing industry grew in the 1900s the PWDs rode
the bow warning other boats of their position in the sometimes
dense fog. Fisherman considered them an important member of the
crew. PWDs being excellent swimmers with webbed feet, would dive
fearlessly into the sea to retrieve broken nets or fish that would
escape when the lines were pulled in. They were also use to send
messages to shore or to guard the ship and equipment. As the
fishing industry declined the PWDs almost became extinct. The breed
was revived in the 1930s and was brought to England and USA in the
1950s. In 1972 the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America was formed
by sixteen lovers of the breed. PWDs became a recognized breed by
the American Kennel club in 1984. |
| Temperment and Behavior
At eight weeks the Pwd puppy will be an eye-opening experience
for the best of dog owners. They are inquisitive and trying but
with consistent training they become a wonderful, obedient, and
loyal companion to their family. They have an incredible instinct
to remain at its masters heels and youll find with a PWD you will
never be alone. Its life is centered on its owners and prefers to
be with you constantly. A crate can be used for short periods of
time when you are not home. Pwds dont make good kennel dogs and
will bark excessively until they are released to be with their
master. Pwds are of exceptional intelligence who obeys their master
with apparent pleasure. With consistent training you will find that
you can teach them many skills such as obedience, agility, flushing
out water fowl ,diving , retrieving and herding to name a few. This
dogs abilities and energy is endless. These dogs are also used for
therapy and assistance to disabled and elderly. |
